London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom situated on the Thames river, the largest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world.

London began on two small patches of dry land in the middle of a marsh on the north bank of the Thames. That was before the Romans came. In Roman times it was named Londinium, and was already a centre of trade. Today London covers a vast area, with millions of inhabitants.

The famous clock Big Ben stands near the Houses of Parliament. The country s leaders speak in the Houses of Parliament. The men and women there are the voice of

the British people. The Houses of Parliament stand beside the river Thames. You can go on a boat from Westminster and see London from the river. You can also see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster

You can see the Tower of London from the river Thames. Tower is very old.

Its has a long and cruel history. It is not just one building is the White Tower , the oldest part of the Tower of London. The Bloody Tower is near the river.

Now the King and Queen of Britain do not live in the Tower .

When the Queen is in London , she stays in Buckingham Palace.

Standing not far from the Houses of Parliament , Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. The legend says that Westminster Abbey was founded by St Peter himself.

We know that Westminster Abbey was

built by King Edward in 1065. The coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes place in Westminster Abbey . Some famous English people are also buried here.

The funeral service for Diana , Princess of Wales

took place in Westminster Abbey in September 1997.

Trafalgar Square is the popular place for political rallies and meetings. The Admiral Lord Nelson’s statue surveys the memorial to his great naval victory in 1805. The Admiral’s statue looks towards the House of Parliament. To the other side of the column are fountains.

Buckingham Palace is the best known royal palace in the world. It was build in 1703. When Her Majesty the Queen is in the residence, the Royal Standard flutters over the east front. The palace is open to public in August and September.

St Paul’s Cathedral is the spiritual centre of the City. It was first built in 1666. The present building is the fifth cathedral to built built on the site. The architect of the baroque-style building was Sir Christopher Wren. St Paul’s Cathedral `is a fitting final place for many of the nation’s heroes.

Westminster Abbey has been closely connected with the Crown over 900 years. The Abbey was rebuilt in the 11th century by a king Edward the Confessor. The Abbey contains monuments to monarchs. It is the meeting place for Parliament from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

The Tower of London

The Tower has been part of the capital’s history for the past 900 years. The fortress first built by William the Conqueror as a citadel, royal palace, seat of the government. The Tower now protects the Crown Jewels.

Piccadilly is the centre of entertainment. It is the meeting point of six streets. Here you can find the most expensive shops, restaurants and entertainment places. This centre was created in 1980s.

The British Museum. It’s the national museum of Britain, founded in 1753. It has one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological treasures.

Scotland Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. The national symbol of Scotland is thistle.

Wales Cardiff is the capital of Wales. The national symbol of Wales is a daffodil.

Four main parts of London London consists of four parts which differ from one another: the City Westminster area the West End the East End

The heart of London is the City, its financial and business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are situated there. Few people live here, but over a million people come to the City to work.

St Paul’s Cathedral There are some famous ancient buildings within the City. Perhaps the most striking of them is St Paul’s Cathedral, the greatest of British churches. It was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren.

The Tower of London The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William the Conqueror. It was used as a fortress, a royal palace and a prison. Now it’s a museum.

Westminster is the historic, the governmental part of London. Westminster Abbey has more historic associations than any other building in Britain. Nearly all English kings and queens have been crowned here. Many outstanding statesmen, scientists, writers, poets and painters are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Chaucer, Dickens, Tennyson, Kipling.

Westminster Palace Across the road from Westminster Abbey is Westminster Palace, or the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Parliament.

Big Ben The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big hour bell, known as «Big Ben».

Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen.

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It’s the symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs, and theatres are situated there. There are splendid houses and lovely gardens belonging to wealthy people.

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle of the square.

British Museum On the north side of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. Not far away is the British Museum — the biggest museum in London. It contains a priceless collection of ancient manuscripts, coins, sculptures, etc, and is famous for its library.

The East End was once the poorest district of London The East End was once the poorest district of London — with lots of factories and docks, narrow streets and unimpressive buildings. Today, the district is changing very fast. There are huge offices and new blocks of flats in the East End.
